tamidon: (chef with coffee)

Off I go to the Mill this morning, running an hour late because Alyssa was having a orthodontial emergency, where I find [livejournal.com profile] cloakmaker having a nerovus breakdown, rightfully so. The studio was completely covered in a fine layer of plaster dust. It seems the new downstairs neighbors decided to do some dry wall and plastering. They didn't have permission from the building, nor did they apparently do any plasticking. The powder got blown upstairs. Every bolt of fabric, every machine, every square inch of the place was covered with plaster dust, it looked like someone had painted the floors it was so thick...

Oddly enough, in the middle of this disaster, she didn't get too upset when I gave my 2 week notice.

I amd going to be helping a young couple with a new venture. They bought the old Berlin Orchards, which closed down last spring. Right now they're doing morning coffee and pasties, and ice cream in the evenings, on weekends thru the fall they will be doing harvest festival stuff. Over the winter we will be renovating the first floor and in the spring opening a tea house cafe, with soups, sandwiches and pastries.

This is a great opportunity for me, and Dina does not begrudge it to me, tho the timing could have been better.

The pros of this job: Getting to start my own place, menu and all, from scratch
Setting up the place the way I like
An inordinate amount of trust from a couple that doesn't really particularly know me
If it fails mightily, it was someone else's dime and not someone I see socially
They are really present, the owners, puttng in large amounts of time.
The place has all these animals, including exotic chickens and an alpaca

The cons: 7am start time for now
They seem to not have a clear idea of what they want, which makes it easy for me to get what I
want, but makes me nervous
7 am start time
They don't seem to have loads of experience.
Did I mention a 7am start time?

I've aleady contacted [livejournal.com profile] rikibeth for the summer, and other things are falling in place, I've got coffee contractors to meet with all this week. It's going fast, Im hitting the ground running, but it is really surreal. If I am less than social or interactive for the next few months, sorry, but this place may eat my brain.

Hmmm. Outdoor space or indoor space?

Depending on what's available, I have 2 different answers for you. If its indoor space for bunnies, its possible that the rescue group I work with will be interested. If its outdoor space, then they should seriously look into the population of partially feral rabbits that need homes from the Reno Nevada Rescue earlier this year. That group is looking to place rabbits in homes but they also have a certain number of colonies of neutered rabbits that have been "wild" for too long and are people-shy. For these, they are looking for people with land who are willing to be guardians for a partially feral rabbit warren. I know that this group is trying to get all their arrangements made by the end of September so you'd have to get in touch with them really soon to start the process.

It's a chicken coop type thing with screens, for city kids to see the country. 30 chickens in one hut, 10 heritage breed turkeys in another, ducks, 2 sheep, 2 rescue horses, a percheron and a fresian, and an Alpaca

The other option would be to take in some of the zillions of bunnies which people advertise on Craigslist. Many are already outdoor bunnies and accustomed to living life outside. Others are indoor buns but are being abandoned for one reason or another and should really be taken in before they get dumped in the woods or end up being left on the doorstep of a shelter. If you go this route, look in particular for bunnies that are either not youngsters or ones that are being offered without an adoption fee. These are the ones most likely to be seen as easy prey for snake owners who trawl Craigslist looking for free or cheap bunnies to use as food for their pets.

Okay, not gonna get started. Might froth at the mouth about irresponsible pet owners. Point is, let me know what your timeline is and I can help you get this done. One way or another there are good bunnies out there who do need homes. The rescue group I work with might not be willing to adopt to outdoor homes, but I would rather see the rabbits have a home than get dumped and left to fend for themselves.

I used to go out there to get carboys full of apple juice for brewing ... maybe I can help you carry heavy objects in return for brewing cider?

congratulations on the new job! Plants, animals, nice.

About a mile down Sawyer Hill Rd. The place where our driveway will be is just about where Google thinks 55 Sawyerhill Road is.

Oh cool! I did their first website, in 1999, when i headed the design department of their ISP. I notice they kept using that design until 2005!

It's a nice place- I bet you can do wonders with the cafe!

Congrats, sounds like just the kind of thing you've been looking for.

Do you think Dina might have some part-time work for me once you leave?

I don't think you made it clear in your message. What time do you start in the mornings? :)

(I think I'll duck the expected wallop!)

Hopefully the benefits and self satisfaction of starting something like this from the groundup will outweigh the wake up time.

Awesome opportunity for you, good luck with everything falling into place and getting going!

And so what if it eats your brain for a few months - your friends will gang up to make it spit the brain back out eventually in order to have you back. *hug*
