doeanyone use them or have any info on them to share? I can't take Mark not having a mobile anymore and he won't commit to anything with a contract. Virgin Mobile looks good to me so far.
I use Virgin Mobile and I've been happy with them. They want $20 every three months I think. They're on the Sprint network, so the coverage is pretty good.
It's not that I won't "commit to anything with a contract". I don't want a cell phone. At all. Full stop.
I hate being interrupted by anything, so why would I carry around something whose sole purpose is to interrupt?
I am willing to experiment with a belt-attached annoy-a-tron for a short term to see whether it spends all of its time turned off, or whether it turns out to be more use than bother.
THe school should have it too, there is a trend of parents giving cell phone #'s instead of work ones.Other than that, don't worry too much. Wouldn't hurt for you to be able to call me for directions if you get lost or something:-)
You know, just as a point of reference -- I have had a cell phone for ages, and no one ever calls me on it. But its listed everywhere. It may also count on your friends. Mine are more likely to shoot an email or text message (hrm, text messages to your cell/blackberry so you can ignore if you want?)
For emergencies to call out its useful, but if you are like me and dont carry it, then its not useful for someoen to _reach_ me.
It's up to you if it stays that way or not. I have a cell phone which I only use on the rare occasions I leave the house. Only two poeple know the number, my wife and my 101 years old father-in-law. It's been that way for almost a year and I see no reason to give the number to anyone else. If what they call about is important, they will call back later.
Nota bene: most modern cell phones will allow you to assign ring tones (and in some cases vibration duration/intensity) to (a) individual callers, and (b) unknown (vs random known) callers.
With a little hunting around for the right model, it should be possible to have a phone that makes noise when Tamar (or anyone else who makes the cut) calls, is dead silent for everyone else, and emits an occasional small vibration when you have new voicemail.
If you get a Treo, there's a cheapo utility called "LightWav" that will do this for you.
I used T-Mobile's pre-paid option for several years before I got my contract with them (actually, I've been with them so long my original pre-paid contract was with Omnipoint, then VoiceStream, then T-Mobile. I have never had a problem with control;ling who had the number. Seriously, I have found it a major convenience, and highly recommend them. In fact, the deal I have currently is sufficiently good that it works out much cheaper than my landline ever did.
M was required to get a cell phone by a former job (that paid for it) but he wouldn't give is SS # (which every carrier seemed to require) and so went with pepaid years ago and has been quite happy with it. The cost has been FAR lower than the lowest monthly plan, and he does not give out the number and is not bothered by other folks. Not sure what carier, contact him directly if interested.
