I'm always afraid of running out of candy on Halloween, afraid of what it would do to the psyche of the poor little kid who came to my door to find me empty handed. Oh well, yet again, I have too much candy.
We moved into this house in November 2000, right after a Hallowe'en which, I understand, had plenty of trick-or-treaters on this road. So the next year I bought six bags of candy, even though 9/11 came along. We had two trick-or-treaters.
2002 and 2003 came along and I decorated the house in serious fashion, complete with a boom box playing spooky sound effects. I cut down to three or four bags of things we might eat if they were left over, and we had a handful of trick-or-treaters each year, so we wound up sending candy to the office and inflicting it on our friends at New Year's parties.
This year I played it smart. I bought a single bag of Reese's peanut-butter cups (which Tim, his dad and Morgan all love), then emptied the pantry of various wrapped candies we'd accumulated from other sources (including other kids' birthday parties). I put the bowl out on the porch and ignored it. I don't know how many kids we had this year -- I spotted five while going about my business in the house -- but I've had to refill the bowl once and the Reese's and leftover hard candies are nearly gone :-)
