Russo's is one of those places I shouldn't be allowed in by myself. It's a retail produce store that is a side business of what many think is the best produce company in town. They are purveyors to most of the better restaurants and most of the ethnic restaurants in town. Banana flowers, fresh tamarind, bamboo shoots, fresh longans, all the weird oriental veggies...a truly amazing and,for me, dangerous cheese counters...great charcuterie, nice soups and a fairly mainstream bakery.

I tried to keep myself under control by taking a basket not a cart. That trick never works, now i just have a sore arm.

For this weekend: a trio of marmalades
Meyer lemon, kumquat and Buddha's hand

Next time buy the Buddha's hand last or every 2 feet someone stops and asks what it is and how to use it

I must admit, the Buddha's hand does not look like it grew on this planet.

I love Russo's. I could spend my entire grocery budget there, and then some. I am drooling and wistful looking at that picture and pondering walking through there.

My Buddha's Hand technique is greater than Mantis Fist.

Wow. I started to type "My knowledge of what to do with Buddha's Hand is limited only to zesting," and got kung fu movie dialogue instead.

I miss living right up the street from Russo's. I mean I miss Russo's, not that apartment.

Ditto! Perhaps if we come into town this weekend for the daycare potluck we'll go to Russo's beforehand...

Buddha's hands are absolutely amazing. They also keep for a really long time, so one can, if one finds them cheap, put them in a dresser drawer to scent the delicates. Delightful.

It's actually a Cthulhu Fruit and you should be sure to tell everyone else that.

I dunno, if you turned it upside-down and put googly eyes on it you'd get a flying spaghetti instead. So perhaps it should be Pastafarade instead?

mmmm

The marmalades sound great (though I shudder at the idea of Cthulhu marmalade, that stuff would bite back!)

Funny that a few weeks ago was the first time I've ever seen or heard of Buddha's hand (at Whole Foods, where I and several others were looking askance at it) and since then I've heard of three or four uses for the thing. It does look like an alien sea creature.

I've heard about Russo's for years, and this post finally spurred me to action. [livejournal.com profile] majordomo and I have just returned from there with lots of yummy foods. We also tried the basket-only approach, so his arm is sore and my hands have pickle juice on them. :) If they'd had slivers of sharon fruit for tasting, I would have bought a crate of them. I've tried persimmon before and thought it too mealy, but this thing is delicious!
