I'm not seeing it either. It's a replay of Friendster -- everybody rushes to get on, and then there's nothin' but the sound of crickets -- with a better UI.
I'm noticing the same thing... heck the old sixdegrees.com had a much better search engine for locating folks with common interests in your network, as well as the chain-of-friends that links you to someone else on the network. Orkut's "communities" are a way of finding folks with common interests, and your own friends list is a way of finding folks one hop away from you, but the "missing link" is finding folks more than one hop away with common interests and the like...
Am I seeing things, or does the search function seem to be optimized for someone looking for a date (or "activity partner")?
It does seem to be optimized for dating, but it doesn't really work. I'm connected to 153,888 people, but if I set it to find friends and friends of friends within 100 miles (the maximum) who are looking to date men, it finds exactly one person. Who, sad to say, doesn't really appeal to me.

Ah well, it's free.
