both my cats are getting creaky and old. They are the first and only real pets I owned (who own me?), in general and as an adult. I was thinking about this very same thing, and then decided I didnt want to think about it much more. I'm glad they are still happy and seem comfortable, and yes, this is the longest commitment I have ever had, and I'm glad for it.
